Beat That Drum!

August Shopping Target: $500 Spent: $372.52
Nothing New For A Year: Success Days: 34 Fails: 1

While I was away last week I got to finish the book I was reading called ‘Choosing Eden’ by Adrienne Langman. It’s about a couple in their 50′s who decide on a complete lifestyle change due to their fears of Peak Oil. I must admit that when I first started reading it I made some quick judgments because of the authors financial position. You see I figured that this couple were reasonably comfortable – so much so in fact that they could afford to make the change

Family Fun & Changes

No 2nd Car: Day 19 (finished – see below)
August Shopping Target: $500 Spent: $276.89
Nothing New For A Year: Success Days: 30 Fails: 1

Wow what a fun filled few days we have had. K and I went to my youngest sons place for a couple of days and got to catch up with all the kids. My grandkids are growing so fast and when I see them it is normally only short visits but they are great all the same. We went by bus and train and were met at the train station by my middle son S. He was also kind

Participating Stores Dilemma

There are only a few things that get right up a Compers nose and one of them would have to be the ‘participating stores’ fiasco. It is frustrating to say the least when you see companies advertising online that you could win a fantastic prize by purchasing their goods at ‘participating stores’. The problem is that nine times out ten – those stores are not listed. Countless times phone calls have been made to try and find out what store is actually participating, only to be told that they will have a display in store if they are in it. Yeah

Political Ranters

I am sick to death of people who seem to think that they know so much more than everyone else when it comes to politics. I have been reading lots of blogs on politics and the only thing I see is people who swing one way bashing the people who swing the other way. More often than not, people just resort to slagging off rather than sticking to the policies. Actually half of the people doing the slagging off or sending out dire warnings to others on being very very careful who they vote for wouldn’t even be aware of all

Simple Pleasures

No 2nd Car: Day 9
July Shopping Target: $500 Spent: $493
Nothing New For A Year: Success Days: 20 Fails: 1

I am finding that as we walk this simple path, I am finding myself more. K and I went into the city today to attend the Careers Expo. Catching the bus in is quite relaxing for me – no driving, no stress. Just sitting back and enjoying the scenery or if I choose, to read my book. The Expo was pathetic to say the least and there was nothing there that we hadn’t already discovered online. We also got to see what many

Culture Craze

Just had to share what a fabulous weekend we have had. We have been wanting to go to the Ron Mueck exhibition for some time but other things kept getting in the way, then all of a sudden it was the last week to see it. Doesn’t time just get away from us? The problem though, was we had also planned on going to the Jazz and Jumpers Festival at Warwick . Oh what the hell – we decided to do both!

Thanks to the months of being more frugal then ever, along with our recent cash win and a healthy

When Winning Counts

I thought I would do a post on the little things that matter in the world of comping. Obviously we can’t have major wins everyday so it is often the little prizes that keep us plugging away. For me, the little wins are what makes comping a great hobby.

In the past month I have managed to win several items that will be for K’s birthday. I would say what they are but I think K reads this blog quite often so I better keep my mouth shut! They are worth several hundreds of dollars though, much more than we would have

Doing Without

Day 2 of the no car trial and all going great.

I’ve been mulling over things lately and taking time to really see things for what they are. I have come to the conclusion that some things I can just do without. Doing without is normally seen as a bad thing, like you are missing out on something because you have no choice. Many times though, doing without can be a good thing. As many of you know, we are on a one month trial of having only one car. It means I am left without the car throughout the week. We

Giving Up The Car

G and I have been talking for some time about getting rid of our second car. I know there are many families that live with only one car and some don’t even own one. For us in a small town and G working in the city 40 minutes away we have always felt like we need the second car. Right now though we are in debt and also have to fork out $11,000 for dental work on K that starts in October. So we are looking at every avenue to cut costs. When we are completely honest the second car is
